Ugandan Police says it has scaled up security along the border with South Sudan to prevent continued entry of illegal firearms into the country.

According to Ugandan media, this follows the recovery of two guns in Gulu and Amuru districts, believed to be smuggled from South Sudan and sold to thugs in Uganda.

The Uganda’s Daily Monitor reported last week Ugandan police arrested a suspected thug and recovered an AK47 assault rifle loaded with 40 rounds of ammunition.

The incident took place at Elegu trading Centre, in Atiak Sub-county near the Uganda-South Sudan border.

However, the government of South Sudan says they were not officially informed by the Ugandan authorities about the matter.

“We haven’t got any information about it but we will find out exactly [what happened],” said Amb Mawien Makol, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations.

Amb Makol said the government will look into the matter.
