U.S. govt announces $100m to refugees response in South Sudan

The U.S. government has contributed $100 million to support refugees who are fleeing conflict in Sudan to South Sudan, according to U.S. Ambassador Michael J. Adler.

Ambassador Adler made the remarks in Aweil town of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state on Friday, September 8.

The US ambassador arrived in Aweil to assess the humanitarian situation of thousands of refugees who fled the conflict in Sudan.

Adler – who was seen sitting on the floor with some of the refugees at the Wed-Will refugee settlement, said that refugees’ response is the priority of the U.S. government.

He also commended the government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state for availing land for the refugees to settle.

Adler was speaking to the press after he was received at Aweil airstrip by the acting governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Dr.Tong Lual Ayat.

“My purpose in coming is to visit this facility which is accommodating refugees from the terrible conflict in Sudan,” said the US Ambassador.

“I express my appreciation to the government of South Sudan for keeping the border open and to the state government for making this land available, That is a very serious crisis,” he said.

“I am here because refugees’ response is the priority of the US government, This year we contributed 100 million dollars to support refugees who have come to South Sudan,” he added.

“It’s just a part of brothers and sisters we provide those in South Sudan, and to refugees in Sudan and other countries, it’s time to consider what more can be done to support the refugees who are here,”

“I had the chance to meet with the refugees and I had a chance with the UNHCR and other implementing partners.”

Wed-Wil settlement is hosting over 8,000 refugees who fled from the Sudan crisis.

On his part, the acting governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Tong Lual appreciated the US government for the support to the people affected by the violence.

On Thursday, the special representative of the Secretary General of the UN in South Sudan also visited refugees at Wed-Wil settlement.
