Two killed, 2,000 cows stolen in attacks on Unity State: MP

At least two people were killed, and thousands of cattle were stolen after gunmen attacked Mayom County in Unity State in a span of two weeks, a lawmaker said.

According to Stephen Bol, a legislator representing Mayom County at the National Parliament, the latest attack occurred at around 1:00 pm on Thursday in Madul Village of Riak Payam.

Honorable Bol said the victim is an 18-year-old man named Kai Tap. He also added that four people sustained bullet wounds in the violence.

He said the attackers whom he alleged to be armed youth from Tonj North County of Warrap State, took off with about 1,500 heads of cattle.

“That incident happened yesterday around 1 pm on 18th January 2024. There were armed youth from neighboring Warrap State especially Tonj North they came an attacked one of the cattle camps in a village called Madul,” Bol explained to Eye Radio.

“In that incident, they killed one person and injured four others, and they went away with one thousand five hundred forty-five heads of cattle.”

When contacted, Warrap State Information Minister says, the State Authorities are yet to confirm the incident.

“We are not aware as the state authorities of Warrap. Let me confirm, then I will let you know,” Mayom said in a short interview with Eye Radio.

Mr. Bol further said the deadly incident is not the first cross-border attack of its kind in January 2024.

“On the 8th of January, they also came and attacked a village near a place called Manyit. They killed one person and took five hundred and forty-two cows, the village that was attacked yesterday is called Madul – one of the villages in Riak Payam.”
