Twic authorities have recovered over 100,000 pounds from teachers detained earlier this week, the state minister of education has announced.
It is alleged that the money is part of the girls’ education incentive funding, which is meant to motivate girls to enroll and remain in school.
Under the Girl-child Education – South Sudan program, each girl in upper primary and secondary is paid 2300 pounds every year.
But there have been reports that some pupils did not receive all their dues due to irregularities in giving out the cash.
After recovering over 80,000 pounds on Tuesday, the state police retrieved additional 68,000 pounds from a teacher.
“Over 68,000 pounds was recovered from a teacher who dropped a bag full of money and escaped after seeing the police,” Nyayath Manyuat Kuot told Eye Radio. “Right now police are still searching for that teacher.”
Similar irregularities were reported in Juba this week.
The GESS says it is conducting its own investigations into concerns from parents who say they were forced by some head teachers to pay back part of the money.
