Twic East humanitarian situation improves

An official in Twic East, in Jonglei, says the security situation is gradually improving after the crisis that led to food shortages when the county was cut off from the rest of the state by the conflict.

Last month, a county official said clashes between government forces and forces loyal to Dr. Riek Machar destabilized the flow of goods from Bor to other areas, leading to starvation in the county.

Twic East County Commissioner Dau Akoi said traders have resumed their activities in the county markets.

“These are individual traders. Now if you have money you have something to buy from the markets,” he told Eye Radio.

“This means there is a little bit of improvement and there is movement between Bor and the county.”

Commissioner Dau said some of the traders bring in their goods through Awerial and others had their commodities in store in Bor before the conflict.

He also said prices have gone down, making the cost of living affordable to all the communities in the area.
