 Warrap State authorities say three people were killed and nine others wounded during an attack on a cattle camp in Gogrial East County, which also saw hundreds of cattle raided at the weekend, an allegation that Unity State authorities have strongly denied.

Speaking to Eye Radio on Monday, Warrap State Minister of Information, Mamer Bath Marol, said the incident occurred between 8 and 9 January and was allegedly carried out by armed youth from neighbouring Unity State.

Marol said although security forces have since stabilized the situation, the raided cattle have not yet been recovered.

“The situation now is contained. The deputy governor and the division commander are already on the ground and they have managed to contain the situation,” Marol said.

“But the raided cows have already been taken and none has been recovered. As I stated earlier, three people were killed, nine others wounded, and over 4,000 cattle were raided by armed youth from Unity State between 8th and 9th January.”

He added that Warrap State has called on both the national government and Unity State authorities to initiate a joint investigation.

“I have called on the government and the Unity State government to initiate investigations, establish the facts, and apprehend the criminal group responsible,” Marol said.

In response, Unity State authorities dismissed the accusations, denying that armed elements from the state were responsible for the attack or cattle raiding.

In an official statement dated 11 January 2026, the Government of Unity State said it “categorically disputes and rejects” claims made by the Warrap State Ministry of Information and Communication Services.

“The assertion that armed elements from Unity State were responsible for the alleged raiding of 4,000 cattle or for the attack mentioned in the statement is unfounded and based on misinformation,” the statement said.

Unity State authorities said credible and verified information available to them indicates that the incident involved members of the Baak community from Wut-Wut and Luanyaker areas of Gogrial East County.

“Based on verified information, the cattle raiding incident was carried out by members of the Baak community who reportedly attacked a cattle camp in the Apuk area of Warrap State,” the statement added.

Unity State further stressed that no cattle were brought into its territory and said it has no interest in harbouring criminals or benefiting from cattle raiding or violence against neighbouring states.

Calling for cooperation, the state government urged a joint, objective, and fact-based investigation involving security organs and local authorities from both states.

“We believe that unverified public statements risk escalating tensions, undermining peace efforts, and misinforming the public,” the statement warned.

Both states said they support a joint investigation to establish the facts, address the root causes of the conflict, and prevent further loss of life and property.
