Tambura gets clean drinking water

Author : | Published: Tuesday, May 5, 2015

More than 2,000 households that were getting water from unsafe sources in Tambura County in Western Equatoria State now have access to clean drinking water.

The Tambura Water Project which started in 2013 has reached completion and has been handed over to a local civil society group.

The project is powered by solar and backed up by two generators. The USAID funded the project.

“It is really a thrill. Whenever we travel to South Sudan, we often ask people what their greatest needs are. Particular women, we say what will make you safer and secure, they always say ‘clean drinking water’,” said Teresa McGhie, US government representative.

The project is expected to reduce the burden of women and children walking long distances in search for water.

It is also expected to improve health and livelihoods of the people.

“The women, especially the disabled, are going to benefit very much from this water [project] because they may not walk long distances [again],” said Governor Joseph Bakasoro.

He appreciated the US government for the support.

“I’d like to this opportunity to thank the US government for this water project in Tambura County. We are grateful. It’s been a big project.”

Prior to the construction of the water project, conflict over limited water supplies was common. Many suffered from water-related disease such as bilharzia and diarrhea.

In addition, the project has created job opportunities for the local communities such as carpenters, masons, plumbers and engineers.
