A South Sudanese child has burned to death during an outbreak of fire at a refugee camp in Khartoum, officials at the embassy in Sudan have said.

Two others were wounded and more than 100 shelters destroyed in the fire at Soba Camp on Tuesday.

The humanitarian attaché at the embassy, Kebe Jeremiah, says the cause of the incident is yet to be established.

“This fire caused a very big loss. Over 100 shelters were burned in that area and that is the same area which burned two years ago,” Mr Jeremiah said.

The same camp was razed down by fire recently. Mr Jeremiah stated that the local authorities are considering closing down the camp.

He said the Mayor of Soba has said ‘let the IDPs move from that area or rent house’”.

There are nearly 3,000 South Sudanese refugees at the camp, according to official figures.
