An SSPDF soldier has been speared to death and three civilians injured in a dispute during a market survey in Yirol West County of Lakes State.
The area Commissioner Bol Akhot Agok says the incident occurred as he and a team of engineers tried to establish a GPS coordinate for a new market on the outskirts of Yirol town yesterday.
Agok says the plan was to establish a market along the Juba-Rumbek highway and distribute it to the community.
However, some elements within that community who were opposed to the initiative attacked the security personnel with spears and sticks, killing Corporal Mabol Mading.
“We went on the ground for the taking of coordinates using GPS to make the master plan for Yirol’s new market along the Juba-Rumbek highway. So that place according to our master plan is going to be a new market, so we went there to take the meters so that the engineers go and design the map, Commissioner Akhot narrated to Eye Radio what happened.
But the wrong elements within that community came and attacked the security forces using spears and sticks and they speared one of our soldiers to death, he was a corporal of the SSPDF.
“Three of them received minor injuries from gunshots, and they are now stable in Yirol hospital,” he confirmed to Eye Radio.
The County authorities said they had planned to survey the designated area and distribute it to the community in January 2024.
Commissioner Agok said the government’s plan to establish the new market will move on despite the resistance from elements within the community. Â
