A lawmaker from Ayod County of Jonglei State at the national parliament has raised concern over the rampant fuel stations in Juba.

According to Mary Nyaulang, there is a speedy rise in the number of petrol stations in Juba City with some of them situated close to schools, hospitals, churches, and residential areas

She wondered if the companies dealing in fuel businesses are authorized by the City Council to erect fuel refilling stations near public spaces.

Nyaulang is now calling on the parliament to look into the matter to find a solution to end the vice.

She spoke during a parliamentary sitting this morning in Juba.

“My point of information is that there is a very speedy and rampant construction of petrol stations in Juba everywhere, near the schools, near the hospitals, near the Churches, near the residents and along the roads.

“It is very scary, it is everywhere, and you know with the issues of fuel in the residential areas which are very dangerous. We need to look into this,” she laments.

But in response, House Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba directs the committees on Petroleum and Environment to engage with the Minister of Petroleum and City Council to look into the matter.

“We see everywhere, there is a petrol station and I think this is for the committee on Petroleum and Environment,

“So this is to be taken up by the two committees so that we can find out from the Minister of Petroleum, the related institutions including the city council to answer this question, ” she said.

Due to the flammability of petrol vapours, fuel stations carry a risk of fire or explosion if petrol vapours come into contact with a heat substance capable of igniting it.
