A South Sudanese activist and refugee in Uganda has appealed to the government to restore peace for them to return home.

Jakisana Soro is also an artist by profession and currently lives in the Rhino settlement camp in Uganda.

He says the return and resettlement of refugees is being discouraged by the insecurities and dire humanitarian situation in South Sudan.

Soro says the situation reminds refugees why they left in the first place.

“Each time there is news or rumors or whatever that comes from South Sudan about someone being killed or attacked on the road, it triggers the fear of what made refugees come to Uganda in the first place,” Soro said.

According to him, the recent clashes in the country and the rumors of clashes and road ambushes have made it hard for the refugees to come back home.

Speaking to Eye Radio this morning, he says the government should account for the plight of refugees and internally displaced persons.

“So I think everyone here, in general, is hoping for each in South Sudan and for peace should take into account that people were displaced from South Sudan and these people live in villages in Uganda, Kenya, and Congo.”

“The government should find ways and recognize and account for that, and really put forward means and mechanisms and way but people need to see that peace in South Sudan is genuine.”

In recent months, inter-communal violence has been reported in different parts of the country, including Upper Nile, Greater Jonglei, Warrap State, and Central Equatoria State.
