The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ramadan Abdallah Goc has called on the UN Security Council to joint calls for credible investigation into recent killing of South Sudanese civilians allegedly by the Sudanese army in Wad Madani city.
After the recapture of Wad Madani on January 11, 2025, footages were published on social media of South Sudanese nationals in civilian clothes laying dead in the streets, with others executed publicly on camera.
The atrocities have raised concerns about the safety of thousands of South Sudanese nationals who are stranded in the war-torn neighboring country.
The event prompted angry youths in South Sudan to go on the streets of major towns to voice their anger and demand for justice. Others attacked some Sudanese-owned shops in markets in Juba and Aweil in an apparent reprisal.
Foreign Minister Ramadan Mohammed Abdallah Goc thanked regional blocs including the IGAD, African Union Commission and East African Community for condemning the Sudan incident.
Addressing a meeting on strengthening African leadership in counter-terrorism and advancing sustainable peace and security, Goc said he expects the UN Security Council to joint the call for justice.
“Acts of terrorism affected South Sudanese during the struggle days, but last week, we saw live acts of terrorism in the inhumane killing of innocent South Sudanese when the Sudanese army and their allied group took over Madani,” he stated.
“South Sudanese were brutally killed and we thank the African Union, and Chairperson of East African Community, IGAD, for their condemnation of what happened to our people.”
“We call upon the security council to join us in our call for the investigation on the killing of our South Sudanese people in Sudan.”
On January 17, President Kiir told protesting South Sudanese that he felt their pain at the “heinous atrocities” committed against countrymen in the capital of Sudan’s Al Jazira state, saying it can only compare to “terrorism”.
So far, the Sudanese military government has formed a committee that was already sworn in to investigate the atrocities, according to the head of committee, Yassir Bashir Al-Bukhari who is First Assistant to the Attorney General of the Sudan.
