China has called on the UN Security Council to lift sanctions on South Sudan, arguing that international partners must respect the country’s sovereignty while supporting peace and stability.

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Fu Cong, stressed that external support for South Sudan should focus on constructive engagement rather than punitive measures.

“The international community should, on the basis of respecting South Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, play a more constructive role in promoting peace and stability and assisting the South Sudanese people, timely adjust or lift sanctions on the country while refraining from undue interference or pressure,” Ambassador Fu stated.

China’s position aligns with growing calls from African nations and regional bodies urging the Security Council to review and ease existing embargoes and restrictions.

Beijing maintains that sanctions hamper the South Sudanese government’s ability to build state capacity, maintain national security, and implement key provisions of the peace process.
