President Salva Kiir has told South Sudanese that he feels their pain at the “heinous atrocities” committed against countrymen in the capital of Sudan’s Al Jazira state, saying it can only compare to “terrorism”.
The Head of State made his address to the nation following a night of unrest and looting targeting Sudanese-owned shops and homes in Juba and Northern Bahr el Ghazal, where three people were killed and seven others injured according to the police.
President Kiir said the “heinous” crimes allegedly committed by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) unacceptable and can only compare to terrorism.
Kiir said since the gruesome murders filmed by solders was revealed on social media, he has directed the foreign ministry to summon the Sudanese envoy to Juba to explain the incidents, and further demanded credible investigation and justice for the victims.
“I therefore call on South Sudanese citizens to remain calm and refrain from retaliation,” the President said.
“It is crucial that we do not allow anger and emotions to cloud our judgement and turn against Sudanese brothers and sistars.”
Dozens of youth took to the streets in seven neighborhoods in Juba to voice their anger against reports of South Sudanese nationals killed allegedly by the Sudanese army in Wad Madani city, police spokesperson, John Kassara Koang said.
Col Kassara revealed that the violent demonstration started at around 8:00 PM and shops were looted, while the casualties were sustained in confrontation with security forces.
Following a meeting with police chief Gen Abraham Manyuat on Friday, President Kiir ordered the security forces to restore law and order in the country, amid growing protests over the killings of South Sudanese.
IGP Gen. Manyuat told the president that the situation is contained in the capital and across the country. He reassured the President that security forces were maintaining peace everywhere in the city.
He further confirmed that the Government has now taken full responsibility for the safety of Sudanese nationals residing in South Sudan as it continues to keenly monitor the situation.
