South Sudan has joined fellow oil-producing nations in Baku, Azerbaijan, for an OPEC+ technical meeting focused on strengthening cooperation on energy policy, technology, market stability, and global energy security.
The meeting brings together representatives from countries participating in the OPEC+ Charter of Cooperation to discuss strategies for maintaining a stable global oil market and addressing emerging challenges facing the energy sector.
Speaking at the forum, Eng. Awow Daniel, a Technical Consultant at South Sudan’s Ministry of Petroleum, said the country’s participation underscores its commitment to global energy security and efforts to stabilize oil markets, which remain crucial to South Sudan’s economy.
He noted that the Charter of Cooperation provides a platform for oil-producing countries to collaborate on key energy issues and contribute to decision-making that shapes the future of the global energy sector.
“South Sudan is an oil-producing country and it is important for us to participate in global efforts aimed at stabilizing the energy market,” Awow said. “As a nation that relies heavily on oil revenues, we have a strong interest in seeing stable oil prices and a balanced market. Our participation reflects our commitment to global energy security, addressing energy poverty, and supporting affordable access to energy.”
Awow added that the forum presents an opportunity for South Sudan to contribute to discussions on energy security while advancing the interests of Africa within the global energy landscape.
Addressing delegates at the meeting, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy, Parviz Shahbazov, emphasized the continuing importance of oil in the global economy despite the accelerating transition toward cleaner energy sources.
He described OPEC+ as more than a mechanism for managing production levels, saying it also serves as a vital platform for cooperation among producing and consuming nations.
“Despite the accelerating energy transition, oil remains one of the cornerstones of the global economy and energy security and will continue to do so for decades to come,” Shahbazov said. “OPEC Plus contributes to preserving stability in the global oil market and maintaining a balanced relationship between the interests of producing and consuming countries.”
He added that energy represents not only economic development but also reliable partnerships, mutual trust, and shared responsibility among nations.
South Sudan depends on oil for the bulk of its national revenue, making developments in global energy markets particularly significant for the country’s economic stability. The OPEC+ technical meeting provides participating nations with an opportunity to exchange expertise, strengthen cooperation, and explore ways of promoting energy security, market stability, and sustainable development in the petroleum sector.
