New schedule for Dr Machar’s return

Author : | Published: Friday, April 15, 2016

The SPLM in Opposition has released a new program for the reception of Dr Riek on his return to Juba.

Dr Riek has been outside the capital since the outbreak of the conflict in December 2013, and is now required in Juba under the peace agreement to work with President Salva Kiir in forming a transitional government.

Dr Riek had wanted to take oath of office on arrival on Monday and to address a joint rally with all parties to the peace agreement.

The government, however, rejected the request and drew up of a program that indicates Dr Riek would be take oath of office the next day and will not address any public rally.

The new schedule released last evening by the deputy spokesman in the office of Dr Riek maintains the swearing-in ceremony on the same day of his arrival.

But the public rally Dr Riek had wanted to address has been removed.

Col. Nyarji Roman said the swearing in ceremony will be attended by Festus Mogae of Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission, Oumar Alpha Konare of African Union High Representative, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and other dignitaries.

The opposition has warned that Dr Riek will not come to Juba as scheduled unless the government agrees to have him sworn in on the same day and that JMEC confirms the demilitarization of Juba.

But the Minister of Information, Michael Makuei, says government forces have been redeployed outside Juba under the agreement and termed the conditions as excuses to delay the return of Dr Riek to Juba.

The government is yet to react to the new schedule.
