France has confirmed its first case of Ebola after a doctor who recently traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo tested positive for the virus.

French health authorities say the patient is in stable condition and receiving treatment at a specialized medical facility.

Officials have launched contact tracing efforts to identify and monitor anyone who may have been exposed to the virus.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently battling an Ebola outbreak that has killed at least 260 people and infected more than 1,000 others, according to the World Health Organization.

Health authorities say the risk of infection to the wider European population remains low.
