The Ministry of Environment is calling for revision of contracts awarded by the government of Sudan to oil companies here in order to safeguard the environment.

The Ministry made the statement as the country joins the rest of the world in celebrating the World Environment Day today.

The acting Undersecretary in the Ministry of Environment told Eye Radio on the Dawn program this morning that the environmental conditions in the oil fields are deplorable.

Victor Wurda Lotombe said people living in the nearby oilfields are affected by the activities of oil companies.

As part of World Environment Day, Mr. Wurda also urged the public to take good care of their environment in order to stay safe.

“Our message of 2014 we should focus in cleanness in on environmental health, where by the local government in the local authorities should now work very hard at the local municipalities to see to it that each municipality works so hard,” Mr Wurda added.

The theme for this year’s celebration of the World Environment Day is: “Raise Your Voice, Not at the Sea level”.
