Remanding children to the same prisons with adults has been increasing the number of criminals, MPs in the National Assembly say.
The Committee for Gender, Child and Social Welfare says children learn about more crime tactics from adults with whom they have been detained.
It recommends that there should be a separate facility for juveniles found guilty of committing crime.
Hon. Alfred Wol, committee chairperson, told Eye Radio that there should be an awareness campaign on the rights of the child.
“Once convicted or remanded to cells, they should be taken to juvenile [correctional facility] but not to prison them with adults as they might be criminally influenced,” said Hon Wol.
Recently, the assembly ratified the African Charter on Rights and Welfare of the child.
