The National Security Service says experts are using digital forensic technology to track down individuals behind false information and conspiracy theories circulating on social media.
The agency warns that those identified will face arrest and prosecution under South Sudan’s new Cybercrime and Computer Misuse Act.
Speaking early this week at a press conference in Juba, National Security Service spokesperson David John Kumuri said the Internal Security Bureau has engaged experts and technocrats to identify those responsible for what it describes as defamatory online posts.
He said, “As service issued this statement, experts and technocrats are presently exploring technological forensic services to unearth individuals and groups behind posts of this and similar nature, and once caught shall be apprehended. The ISB will definitely arrest them, investigate them thoroughly and arraign them before the court for the law to take its course.”
Kumuri also dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging that the Director General of the Internal Security Bureau, General Akec Tong Aleu, met community leaders from Tonj to discuss a memorandum of understanding, mining activities, or related issues.
He said, “The Director General of Internal Security Bureau, General Akec Tong Aleu, has not in any way met or discussed community leaders or chiefs of Tonj anything to do either with the MOU signing or mining or any other claims.”
He further described the allegations linking General Akec Tong Aleu and Adut Salva Kiir to mining extensions as false.
The National Security Service urged the public to use social media responsibly, avoid spreading misinformation, and instead promote discussions that contribute to national development.
