After a poor performance in Math in the last year’s primary leaving examinations, some teachers will be sent to Nairobi to learn how to teach the subject better.

Four primary school teachers from Central Equatoria State will attend a training course in the Kenyan capital Nairobi in order to improve the standard of pupils in mathematics.

The training will be supported by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, JICA.

The State Ministry of Education says pupils who sat for the Primary Leaving Examinations during the academic year 2013-2014 performed poorly in mathematics.

The State Minister of Education, Hastin Yokwe, says out of 8,500 pupils who sat for the final examinations, only about 1,200 passed mathematics.

He says an assessment was conducted and it was found that pupils performed poorly in mathematics due to lack of qualified teachers who could teach the subject.

“They (JICA) have already accepted to take four teachers to Nairobi for training so that they become trainers of trainers,” Mr Hastin said.

“But we want to make an effort to see if the current center here in Juba can be opened so that quite a big number of teachers can be taken there for training in mathematics in order to increase the number of teachers in mathematics” he said.

Mr. Yokwe said the four teachers who will attend a refresher course in Nairobi will return home and train their colleagues who teach mathematics.
