Two killed in latest Lakes communal violence

Two people have died as a result of continued inter-communal clashes in Lakes State, officials have said.

The State Minister of Information, Marik Nanga Marik, told Eye Radio that the 2 were killed in inter-clan clashes which erupted during a peace conference in Rumbek East County earlier this week.

“Youth from both sides met and in that process, two lives were lost and one person was injured,” he said.

“It was not a planned attack.”

On Sunday, the state government convened a 4 days peace dialogue to discuss issues of killings and cattle rustling in the state.

Mr. Marik said the conference resolved –among other issues – to disarm the civil population in the state.

“The conference resolved to disarm the civil population in Lakes state; a total disarmament in all the counties of Lakes state,” he read out the recommendations.

“And those who engage in highway robberies and those who kill in the process of robbing and also in the process of cattle raiding….have to be arrested and brought to book.”

Last week, over 50 people died in inter-communal clashes between civilians in Cuie bet and Rumbek North Counties in Lakes state.
