Kiir-Riek talks progressing well, Amum

There has been progress in the meeting between the president Salva Kiir and Riek Machar in Nairobi, the SPLM Secretary-General, Pagan Amum, has said.

The two leaders are meeting face to face over full implementation of the Arusha Agreement.

Mr. Amum told Eye Radio from Nairobi that a final peace deal will be signed soon.

“The efforts of his excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta is to remove the obstacles that have been facing us and that has delayed the ending of the war and signing of the peace agreement in IGAD-[led talks], as well as removing obstacles preventing us from implementing the Arusha Agreement to reunite the SPLM,” Mr Amum said.

In the Arusha agreement, the signatories vowed — once again — to comply with the provisions of a cessation of hostilities agreement reached nearly a year ago, and to make a “public apology to the people of South Sudan for what has happened since December 15, 2013.”

They also agreed to “combat the culture of tribalism, militarism and sectarianism” in politics, and to work toward building a South Sudan in which political efforts are focused on democracy and development.
