President Salva Kiir on Wednesday (Dec.10) agreed with leaders of political parties to defer the population census and the permanent constitution, two key pre-election requirements, to be carried out after the 2026 general elections.

The decision was reached during a meeting Kiir held with leaders of political parties to agree on the final steps of South Sudan’s transitional period and prepare for the December 2026 elections as outlined in the peace Roadmap.

SPLM Secretary-General Dr. Akol Paul Kordit said after the meeting that the political parties had unanimously endorsed amendments to key provisions of the Revitalised Peace Agreement.

He said the proposed changes are intended to remove remaining obstacles and create a smoother path toward the polls.

According to Dr. Akol, the leaders also agreed to defer several outstanding transitional tasks — including the permanent constitution-making process and the national population census — to be undertaken as priority programs after the elections.

The parties further resolved to form a joint committee made up of representatives from political parties to address unresolved issues. A legal committee chaired by the Minister of Justice will oversee the required legislative amendments.

Officials say the meeting shows renewed commitment among South Sudan’s political leaders as they work toward a peaceful transfer of power and stronger democratic governance — an effort many hope will help build a more stable and cohesive nation.
