A new security deal has been reached between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces, the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to secure the Heglig oil field, also known as Panthou.

According to SSBC, SSPDF Chief of Defence Forces General Dr Paul Nang Majok confirmed the agreement, saying it is part of ongoing joint efforts to stabilise the area and protect key infrastructure.

The oil installations in Heglig are considered critical to the economies of both countries.

General Nang said the arrangement gives the SSPDF primary responsibility for security in the oil field.

He said the increased presence is expected to improve safety and help maintain peace for communities living around the contested area.

He also reaffirmed the SSPDF’s commitment to protect civilians, safeguard national assets and ensure the zone remains stable and free from armed clashes.

The new deal comes days after paramilitary forces took control of the Heglig oil field, which hosts processing facilities for South Sudan’s crude.

The oil is transported through a pipeline to Port Sudan before reaching international markets.
