Justice Ministry Probes Wau Killings

Author : | Published: Thursday, May 30, 2013

There are investigations underway to arrest police officers who were involved in the killing of protestors in Wau, Justice Ministry has said.

In December, 11 people were reportedly shot at by the police when they protested the relocation of Wau County headquarters to Bagari Payam.

Many people, including politicians were arrested and accused of inciting the violence.

However, no arrests have been made on security personnel who opened fire at the protestors.

Last week, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch urged the state and the government of South Sudan to conduct full and impartial investigations into the Wau killing.

The deputy Minister of Justice, Paulino Wanawila told Eye Radio that she is aware of investigations taking place on the Wau incident:

“I know that some action is being taken to identify who has shot who. I know about that, but I cannot tell you more because this something which is subject to investigations.”

Last month, the specialized court in Wau acquitted the former Commissioner of Wau due to lack of evidence to convict him for instigating the December violence.
