The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is working closely with Sudanese authorities to reverse the decision of sentencing to death a woman married to a South Sudan national.

Last week, Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, who is married to Daniel Wani was convicted of apostasy by a Khartoum court and sentenced to death by hanging.

She was also sentenced to 100 lashes for committing adultery –according to Shari’a law – for marrying Mr. Wani who is a South Sudanese Christian.

Yehya refused to denounce Christianity, saying she was not a Muslim.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mawien Makol told Eye Radio that the ministry is in consultation with the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the matter.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actually working together with government of Sudan to try to see this thing resolved peacefully based on relations between Sudan and South Sudan,” he said.

Human Rights bodies have lodged an appeal against the death sentence and asked the Sudanese Supreme Court to reverse the decision.

Meriam Yehya Ibrahim is born to an Ethiopian Christian mother and a Sudanese Muslim father from Gedarif state in Eastern Sudan.
