A leading civil society activist in Jonglei State has appealed to the government for urgent intervention to prevent renewed violence between the communities of Duk and Twic East Counties.

Bol Deng Bol, the Executive Director of INTREPID South Sudan and Chairperson of the Jonglei Civil Society Network, warned that the situation could escalate into violence if urgent action is not taken.

He urged the government to act quickly to prevent clashes and create room for peaceful dialogue.

Speaking to Eye Radio via a messaging app, Bol raised concerns over what he described as “suspicious mobilization and hate speech” spreading on social media and at community events.

He also criticized what he called the government’s delayed response, despite earlier promises by Jonglei State Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok to resolve the matter through peaceful mediation.

Bol made two key recommendations to ease tensions.

“Second, there is a critical need for grassroots consultative meetings. While a meeting was held in Juba, we urgently need consultations at the local level, involving chiefs, youth, women, and other stakeholders. These grassroots meetings should culminate in a peaceful mediation process,” he said.

He stressed that lasting peace in Jonglei depends on inclusive dialogue and timely government response.

Communities in Duk and Twic East have clashed repeatedly in the past, mainly over land and administrative boundaries.
