Insecurity hampers Lakes’ development plans

The Lakes state caretaker governor says his plan to construct roads and develop agriculture has been interrupted by insecurity in the state.

Matur Chut said the plan to link all the state counties to Rumbek town will be delayed.

He told Eye Radio that frequent inter-communal violence in the state has also interfered with his plan to improve agriculture.

“This year, we were planning to construct roads within the state, we coordinated with the UN on two projects for this year; we told the Ministry of Agriculture that the government must have an agricultural program and not individual program,” he said.

However, the insecurity “does not allow developmental programs to go ahead”.

Matur Chut says insecurity and widespread availability of light weapons are the main causes of deaths in the state.

He said they are working to create awareness amongst the civilians on the dangers of arms possession.

This month over sixty people have been killed in Lakes State in separate inter- communal clashes.
