Igga urges SPLM-In Opposition, former detainees to return home

The Vice President is calling on the SPLM-In Opposition and the former detainees to return home in order to fully implement the Arusha agreement signed last week.

The three SPLM factions have agreed to reunite and reconcile their party leadership and membership.

The document was signed by President Salva Kiir, Dr. Riek Machar and the Deng Alor.

They agreed on most of the crucial issues on politics, party reorganization and leadership.

Vice President, James Wani Igga, says suggestions were made that the three groups continue meeting in Arusha, Tanzania.

He told an SPLM briefing in Juba that delegations should instead meet in Juba.

“It will send wrong signal to continue to be in Arusha –for what? It is now time for implementation like during the CPA period,” Mr Igga said.

We agreed and signed the CPA outside, but the implementation took place inside here. We did not doubt that there will be an issue with our security or safety guarantees. How do you sign an agreement without trusting the other party?”

Wani Igga also said that the Arusha agreement resolves the root causes of the conflict in the country.

“The work of the tripartite committee has to be done here in Juba. And we must end the war, comrades, because if we don’t end this war, the war will end us,” he added.

He said the IGAD peace dialogue will now have to focus largely on issues of security and economic arrangements, and government structures.
