The Mayor of Torit says a small group of Internally Displaced Persons who

were transported from Unity State last month have arrived in Eastern Equatoria State.

The IDPs fled following the eruption of the crisis two months ago.

Steven Osaldo was speaking to Eye Radio’s Dawn show from Torit.

“The IDPs who are coming are passing through Torit and go to Kakuma, and some pass through Nimule to Adjumani [in northern Uganda]. So here we don’t have any camps for IDPs because our town is normal and we don’t want to encourage IDPs in Torit Town. All IDPs who are coming from Juba, Jonglei and from other towns, there are IDPs who also who came from Bentiu and belonged to Eastern Equatoria State. All of them have gone to their relatives without making any camp here so most of them went to join their families in their houses,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Central Equatoria State, over 500 IDPs are still living in the former UNMISS camp in Yei.

The Mayor of Yei says 2,000 others are living in open spaces in the neighborhood.

Oba Cecilia told Eye Radio that the IDPs are receiving humanitarian assistance from churches and international NGOs that are operating in Yei.

“In the beginning there were so many IDPs, more than 600. But now some of them who might have been helped by their relatives have gone to their respective villages. Now there are few of them like 200, but we don’t know the exact number, the number keeps fluctuating because some people keep coming from other places like Maridi and Yambio and live here in the town. And by the way, the IDPs in the residential areas are more than those who are in the camps, they are more than two thousand,” she said.

Madam Oba said the municipality is devising mechanisms to manage the affairs in Yei, including renovation of roads linking the county with other towns.
