Internally Displaced Persons who are sheltering at the United Nations base in Upper Nile Sate capital Malakal say they fear returning to their homes due to insecurity.

Thousands of civilians fled the town and sought refuge at the UN following last month’s fighting, which left hundreds of people dead.

The State Governor, Simon Kun Pouch, said the town is now safe, and urged those IDPs at UNMISS to return to their homes.

However, speaking to Eye Radio at UNMISS camp; some IDPs said it is risky to return home.

Anyeza Zakaria Kutjok, a mother of six children, said she fears that they would be attacked anytime if they return to their homes.

“Personally I will not return because some people who attacked Malakal are still alive and maybe they are hiding in houses in the town, and also the dead bodies are not cleared all…we will continue to live here at UNMISS even if we die with our children here in this muddy site, it is better because we are tired”, she said.

Julia Akich Awur said her home was burnt down and she lost everything.

“I have no house my home was burnt down and all my things were destroyed and looted, even if I return to the town I have nowhere to live in. We were not the ones who caused the war, but we are now the ones facing the consequences, said Awur.

The IDPs also urged UNMISS to relocate them to a safer site and provide education for their children inside the camp.
