The U.S Government has announced the first two South Sudanese officials sanctioned.
Last month, President Obama signed an executive order clearing the way for sanctions on individuals and entities involved in fueling violence and obstructing the peace process in South Sudan.
Yesterday, the White House named Major-General Marial Chanuong, from the government, and Major General Peter Gadet, form the SPLA in Opposition forces for sanctions.
They have been accused by the US government of targeting civilians and fomenting ethnic violence.
According to the U.S. Government, the actions of the two are contributing to the mounting humanitarian and human rights catastrophe unfolding in South Sudan.
The U.S. Government says these sanctions are a first step and should serve as a clear warning.
An analyst with the London-based think tank- Chatham House in the United Kingdom, says the targeted sanctions imposed by the U.S Government on the two officials are likely to be followed through.
Ahmed Suleiman, says the sanctions should be considered a strong warning.
“The issued sanctions aren’t an idle threat by the International Community, the UN and the US are willing to follow through.”, he said.
For South Sudan to have a sustained period of peace without fighting, there really has to be a commitment on both sides on the SPLM in Opposition side and on the SPLM government side”, he added.
The U.S says it is determined to hold accountable those who choose violence and more targeted sanctions will be issued against those who continue to undermine the country’s stability.
