Hundreds of people have been displaced as floodwater flowing from neighboring Sudan submerged Renk County in Upper Nile State leading to the destruction of livelihoods.

Floodwater triggered by torrential rains in neighboring Sudan reportedly broke riverbanks and submerged residential areas.

Renk County Commissioner Padiet Gabriel said Friday that residents are relocating to higher grounds while others settled in schools and churches.

Padiet said the flooding is caused by an enormous volume of water flowing from Tadamun County in the Damazine region, through Khor Selif.

He also called on humanitarian organizations to provide humanitarian assistance to the flood victims.

“Yesterday (Thursday) and the day before yesterday (Wednesday) the water flooded roads, residential areas and bridges. We thank God people are all fine.”

“Yesterday, (Thursday), I talked to the organizations. I met them and told them, you’re an organization you have seen the situation, and they said they will come on Saturday at 10 am or 11 am want them to distribute the assistance.”

On August 30, the IGAD Climate Center recently predicted heavy rainfall in the southern part of Sudan, which borders Renk County.
