Gov’t downplays US senators’ criticism of conflict

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has downplayed criticisms from the senators in the United States over the continuation of the conflict.

At a hearing of the foreign relations committee in Washington DC last week, the senators said South Sudanese diplomats at the meeting should have been even embarrassed to represent the government.

Committee chairman Bob Corker criticized the government for interfering with humanitarian aid during the conflict.

Some said the two parties should speed up the implementation of the agreement and called for strict financial sanctions.

“I think we cannot be accused of not being serious. What we are asking now is not an accusation. We are asking for the support so that this implementation is also handled because it needs a lot of money,” Mawien Makol, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told Eye Radio.

“The government is more than serious to implement the peace because peace is something that the people of South Sudan deserve.

“The government now is waiting for the advanced team of the opposition to come. Once they arrive here, we will be sitting and talking about the security arrangements that we have signed as the starting points for us to be able to form a government of national unity.”

The hearing was under the theme: Independent South Sudan: Failure of Leadership.
