CES lawmakers criticize Kiir’s decree on herders

A joint committee in Central Equatoria state legislative Assembly tasked with scrutinizing the situation in Lainya County says the presidential order for the evacuation of cattle in the area has not been fully implemented.

President Salva Kiir gave the decree early this year.

The committee presented the finding to the State Transitional Legislative Assembly in Central Equatoria today.

“The committee observed that there is insecurity in Kupera, Waji, and Kala Boma of Liwolo payam of Lainya and Kajokeji County due to the presence of the armed pastoralists from other States,” said Thomas Peter, Deputy Chairperson of the body.

The pastoralists mainly come from Lakes and Northern Bahr el Ghazal, according to state officials.

He says the committee recommends that the state government in collaboration with National Ministries of Defense and the Ministry of Interior should ensure the order is fully implemented.

The committee also recommended the state government to implement a resolution for the rampant movement of cattle and pastoralists in Central Equatoria in general.
