The government is rehabilitating water points and strengthening flood protection infrastructure in four states to improve access to safe water and help communities cope with climate-related shocks.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation says the work is being carried out under the World Bank-financed Regional Climate Resilience Program for Eastern and Southern Africa.

The programme targets Eastern Equatoria, Lakes, Jonglei and Upper Nile states.

The ministry says 83 hand pumps were identified for minor rehabilitation, with 32 already restored to improve access to safe water for affected communities.

In Maban County, Upper Nile State, assessments of 50 hand pumps have been completed. Of these, 26 require minor repairs, while 24 need major rehabilitation.

By the end of July, 11 of the minor rehabilitation works had been completed.

In Jonglei State, rehabilitation of weak sections along the Aduar–Jalle dyke is almost complete.

The work is focused on damaged and eroded sections of the dyke to strengthen flood protection for communities and livelihoods.

The ministry says the investments are intended to protect households, livestock and community assets while helping communities better prepare for and recover from flooding and other climate-related shocks.

The programme also involves state authorities and local communities to ensure the rehabilitation works respond to local needs and provide lasting solutions instead of repeated emergency interventions.
