Floods threaten Aweil residents

Author : | Published: August 29, 2016

Floods which submerged suburbs on the outskirts of Aweil town last week are now advancing to the town, an official has said.

On Friday, Aweil State Governor Ronald Ruay Deng said crops and houses had been destroyed by the floods caused by the overflow of rivers and so much rainfall. Several people were displaced.

This morning, Mr Ruai told Eye Radio that the level and speed of the floods was increasing.

“The flood is coming to the town after destroying a lot of farms. It’s coming at a high speed,” the governor said.

“We are going to do an assessment tomorrow with the town mayor to see if we can mobilize so that we organized our forces to see wat we can do to control floods.”

Mr Ruai said those who were displaced last week are still looking for higher grounds.

He said the state authorities are forming a team to assess the situation and recommend ways to control the flood waters.
