The Ethiopian government says it is allowing international humanitarian agencies to use its territory to provide assistance to people affected by the conflict in Eastern Upper Nile State.

The humanitarian liaison officer of the S-P-L-M/S-P-L-A-in Opposition in Ethiopia, Bor Gatwech, says international humanitarian organizations can now use Ethiopia to deliver humanitarian assistance in areas controlled by forces loyal to the former Vice President Dr. Riek Machar.

“With the cooperation of the Ethiopian government, everything will be ok except that the international community is still mobilizing itself to respond to the needs of the people,” Mr Gatwech told Eye Radio.

Mr. Gatwech, who used to be a Member of Parliament in Juba, said the conflict has displaced an estimated 500, 000 people in Greater Upper Nile region.

“… because most of the counties in Greater Upper Nile region are where the war is being fought; so many of them are displaced.

“Even now there are people who have arrived in Ethiopian. The Ethiopian government is trying to settle them in a camp called Lietchuor,” he said.

The humanitarian officer said they are talking to the World Food Program of the United Nations on how they can respond to the humanitarian crisis inside South Sudan.
