DRC presidential candidate petitions election results

A presidential candidate who won the least votes in the recently concluded elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has filed a petition before the Constitutional Court against the victory of incumbent Félix Tshisekedi.

President Tshisekedi has been declared the winner – garnering 75% of votes ahead of 25 other candidates in the election which has been condemned as a “sham” by several opposition candidates.

Théodore Ngoy, who came last in the presidential election after winning only 4,139 votes, filed the petition just before the expiration of its deadline on Wednesday evening, Africanews reported.

Ngoy, a lawyer, professor and pastor who already ran before in the 2018 presidential election reportedly wants the election annulled.

The Court now has reportedly seven days to examine this appeal and give its decision.

“I thought that the harm done to democracy, human rights and the rule of law should not be confirmed by the Court without the Céni having to justify itself”, he told French radio station RFI.

The DRC’s Constitutional Court is expected to confirm the provisional results on January 10.
