US dismisses regime change allegation

The US Ambassador to South Sudan, Molly Phee, has refuted an allegation by the government that the Obama Administration is supporting regime change in the country.

On Wednesday, the Minister of Information, Michael Makuei, said the government rejected a US proposal for the UN Security Council to send 4,000 additional troops to the country to restore peace in Juba.

Minister Makuei said the proposal “seriously undermines” South Sudan’s sovereignty” and “threatens a return to colonialism” and would make the country a U.N protectorate.

However, in an exclusive interview with Eye Radio this morning, Ambassador Molly Phee describes the allegations by Minister Michael Makuei as “completely false”.

“There is absolutely no language that would support the allegation that there is any effort on behalf of the United States or any other member of the United Nations Security Council  to try and return to colonialism or return to UN protectorate. It is ‘completely false,” Amb Phee said.

“On the basis of the concerns outlined by IGAD and the African Union, it proposes the establishment of the regional protection force, which the government of South Sudan agreed would be helpful, and it would simply provide the resources that would allow that protection force to support South Sudan, recover from the current crisis.”
