Save the Children uses drama to create awareness on sexual harassment

Save the Children on Friday conducted an awareness campaign on cyber sexual harassment to create a conducive working environment for its staff free of the vice.

The campaign was to celebrate the just concluded International Women’s Day.

Sexual harassment includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature in the workplace or learning environment, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The Friday drama depicted a hypothetical boss bordering a junior female staff with inappropriate touches whenever he called her to his office. The lady rejected his request to fall in for him,  but John persisted with his advances and often trashes Jane’s [a character] alleged shoddy work.  Despite the odds, John kept sending nude photos of him to Jane’s phone. The repeated acts angered Jane who later became stressed and was always absent-minded in the place work.

Because she could not take it any longer, she opened up to her mother about what she has been going through, prompting the mother to visit the office to raise the issue with the higher management.

Upon investigations, the man was fired from the job.

After the drama session, the participants were asked about their takeaways from the drama.

The first respondent said; “One of the things I have noted is that, in workplaces  there is a lot of harassment going on, and most of the women are suffering in silence,

” Sometimes they are in dilemma of whether to report or not, because they think they will be sacked or sometimes they are also not confident, said one of the participants,

“Men take advantage of their positions to actually harass or abuse the women that we work with, and this happens if the system does not enforce the policies. Such things are likely to occur and they are likely to continue even if there are systems in place.

In his suggestion, Modi, not his real name said,” the most important thing for us at Safe the Children are to ensure that if their issues of harassment or safeguarding are reported we need to take immediate action.

Meanwhile, a female participant said “We need to be aware of the body language of the people we are working with.”

The 3rd participant said; “One thing I see is,  if the lady accepted the proposal from the boss it would affect other staff because, in case of promotions, the lady would be promoted based on their relationship with the boss,”

Participant four used his live scenario saying, “I am not married, and if the lady on the other side is not married, and we identify something outstanding in common, and we wanted to progress that, what does Safe the children policy say about it?

In a response,  Save the Children said in it’s policy, a staff can enter courtship as long as there is an agreement on the condition that they do not work in the same department and  declares their love affairs to the human resource

But the in-house drama aimed to raise awareness on forms of cyber sexual harassment and the organization’s policy guidelines that protect the rights of the employees against the crime .

“We thought it is also important to raise awareness on cyber harassment that is affecting our female staff, that’s why we came with that drama,” said Veronica Gatpan who is Save the Children’s Gender Coordinator.

“I believe today, they are very aware of it because we want everyone to work peacefully, “

According to Gatpan, Save the Children like any other non-governmental organization has policies that protect individuals against what constitute sexual harassment.

“I believe that in every institution there is a policy that is guiding the staff because we are human beings and we cannot just assume that we will respect one another,

“If anyone comes to harass you, there is a way to handle it that’s why we also performed this drama including [highlighting] our policy guiding all our stall in the country office, she added.

Ms. Gatpan has advised the staff not to fear reporting any harassment saying the policy has granted this right.

“My message to the female staff is that never, everyone has a right, so never ever fear to report a case either to save the children or even in other organizations including the government,”

However, some of the staff said women should dress decently to avoid altering their emotions in a working environment.

Half of world population on track to be overweight by 2035

More than half the world’s population will be classed as obese or overweight by 2035 if action is not taken, the World Obesity Federation warns.

More than four billion people will be affected, with rates rising fastest among children, its report says.

Low or middle-income countries in Africa and Asia are expected to see the greatest rises.

The report predicts the cost of obesity will amount to more than $4tn (£3.3tn) annually by 2035.

The president of the federation, Prof Louise Baur, described the report’s findings as a clear warning to countries to act now or risk repercussions in the future.

The report in particular highlights the rising rates of obesity among children and teenagers, with rates expected to double from 2020 levels among both boys and girls.

Prof Baur said the trend was “particularly worrying”, adding that “governments and policymakers around the world need to do all they can to avoid passing health, social, and economic costs on to the younger generation” by assessing “the systems and root factors” that contribute to obesity.

The effects of obesity’s prevalence on lower-income countries are also highlighted in the report. Nine of the 10 countries with the greatest expected increases in obesity globally are low or lower-middle-income states in Africa and Asia.

Reasons include trends in dietary preferences towards more highly processed foods, greater levels of sedentary behavior, weaker policies to control food supply and marketing, and less well-resourced healthcare services to assist in weight management and health education.

Lower-income countries are “often the least able to respond to obesity and its consequences”.

The findings estimate that rises in obesity rates around the world will have a significant impact on the global economy, equating to 3% of the global Gross Domestic Product.

The report emphasizes that its acknowledgment of the economic impact of obesity “is in no way a reflection of the blame on people living with obesity”.

The data published in the report will be presented to the UN on Monday.

Obese is a medical term used to describe a person with a high excess of body fat.

The report uses body mass index (BMI) to make its assessments. BMI is calculated by dividing an adult’s weight by the square of their height.

Freed Ugandan fans turn to Kagame for London trip to watch Arsenal

Arsenal fans who were freed after arrest for celebrating the club’s win against Manchester United have appealed to Rwandan President Paul Kagame to help them travel to London to watch a home match at the Emirates Stadium.

Felix Bagiire, a radio presenter, said Mr. Kagame was a renowned Arsenal fan who they admire.

Making the request to Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni would “politicize everything”, he added.

“Man United fans talked a lot before the match, they even went to church hours before the match, and [ex-Manchester United player] Gary Neville has been trashing our team’s chances so beating them made us very happy,” Mr. Bagiire said.

Seven of those arrested were released after a night in custody where police interrogated them for any links to opposition politics.

Police said the one who remains in custody had been linked to a previous incident of theft.

Upon their release on Tuesday, the group was invited to the capital, Kampala, where they met police spokesperson Fred Enanga

They also met Asan Kasingye, the chairman of Arsenal fans in Uganda.

Arsenal scored a dramatic last-minute goal to win 3-2 in Sunday’s match against fierce rivals Manchester United.

The fans believe Mikel Arteta has instilled enough confidence in the team to battle for the premier league title.

Mr. Bagiire said they will mobilize 10,000 fans in May to celebrate Arsenal’s victory – which they are sure is on the cards.

“I started supporting Arsenal when Thierry Henry was playing and I’ve never seen them lift the trophy,” he said. “This is our chance.”

Kenya pushes one-pub-per-town order to fight alcoholism

Kenya’s deputy president has ordered government administrators in the country’s central region to enforce a one-pub-per-town directive that was issued last week.

Rigathi Gachagua also wants entertainment joints in the region to only operate between 17:00 to 23:00 in new measures meant to deal with alcoholism.

There are fears the directives could see many resort to homemade alcohol – often laced with industrial chemicals. Deaths from illicit brews have previously been reported.

But Mr Gachagua on Thursday insisted that alcoholism in the region was dire and told officials not to renew pub licences once they expire.

“Let us deal with these issues, let us save the next generation, otherwise we have a problem as society,” he said.

Woman jailed for poking holes in partner’s condoms to get herself pregnant

A woman in Germany has been slapped with a 6-month suspended jail sentence for sexual assault in a case where she was accused of deliberately poking fun at her partner’s condoms, local media reported.

In a ruling on Wednesday, May 4, which a regional court in German’s Bielefeld city termed as “historic”, the lady was found guilty of sexual assault for “stealthing”.

“Stealthing” occurs when a man secretly removes his condom during sexual intercourse without the knowledge of his partner.

“This provision also applies in the reverse case. The condoms were rendered unusable without the man’s knowledge or his consent,” Judge Astrid Salewski said in her decision.

The 39-year-old woman was in a “friends with benefits” casual, sexual relationship with a 42-year-old man they met online in 2021, according to a report by DW.

The woman is said to have developed deeper feelings for her partner, whom she knew preferred a non-committal relationship.

The lady then secretly poked holes in the package of condoms that her partner kept in his nightstand, hoping to get pregnant.

Although her efforts were reportedly unsuccessful, she later wrote the man a message on WhatsApp, saying that she believed she was pregnant and further disclosed that she’d purposefully damaged the condoms.

The 42-year-old man then filed a suit against her, where she later confessed to attempts of manipulating her partner.
