UNMISS to establish base in Nasir County, says commissioner

Nasir County commissioner in Upper Nile State said the UN Mission in South Sudan will establish a temporary base in the area, amid an influx of refugees from Sudan and Ethiopia.

Duol Kun Thian said Sunday he met a UNMISS high-level delegation coming from the state capital, Malakal, to discuss the prospect of their return to the area 8 years after the South Sudan civil war forced them to vacate.

“We discussed general security situations and the status of the ongoing influx of returnees coming from Ethiopia Refugee Camps and Sudan,” Kun said in a statement posted on Facebook.

He said: “UNMISS expressed interest in coming back and operating in Nasir County once again after 8 years of destruction of civil war,” while adding that the state and local authorities have warmly welcomed them “their intention to come home wholeheartedly” as a peacekeeping force and international partner.

Adil dispatches team to Pibor for dialogue over child abductions

Central Equatoria governor has dispatched a committee to the Pibor Administrative Area to dialogue with local authorities about rampant child abduction in the state.

Emmanuel Adil Anthony formed the five-member delegation during a meeting of the state Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday.

The ad-hoc committee is headed by Adil’s advisor on Peace and Security, Hon. Angelo Daya.

It has a “clear mandate to dialogue with authorities of Greater Pibor Administrative Area and find some amicable remedies towards the recurring child abduction cases in the restive Counties of Terekeka and Juba,” according to a statement from the Governor’s press office.

There have been reports of rampant child abduction in the east and north of Central Equatoria State.

The latest incident was on Tuesday, October 3, when three children aged less than 10 years, were abducted from Langabu Boma by unidentified armed men, according to the Director of Lirya Payam of Juba County.

Christopher Sebit said the assailants also attacked their mother – leaving her in critical condition.

In 2017, the local government administrator revealed in research that at least 115 children had been abducted from the Lirya, Lokiliri, and Lowoi areas of Juba between 1989 and 2017.

The research also showed that at least thirty-six people were killed by abductors as they attempted to kidnap children.

Sebit’s study focused on the Impact of Child Abduction on Behavioral Attitude, Resilience, Security, and Economy in the Lulubo and Lokoya areas of Jubek State.
