The Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba, Cardinal Stephen Ameyu, has called on South Sudanese leaders to recommit to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement to ensure a transparent election.

Delivering his Christmas message in Juba on Monday (December 22, 2025), Cardinal Ameyu said accelerating the constitution-making process, conducting the census, and completing disarmament are key steps toward holding a credible election.

The clergy also urged the international community to continue providing aid and to press South Sudanese leaders to engage in dialogue.

“I call our leaders, the president, vice presidents, ministers and all parties to recommit to the revitalized peace agreement, accelerating constitution making, census, disarmament and elections with transparency urge the International community to sustain aid and pressure for dialogue and champion the non-violent aspirations of civilians,” he said.

The unity government has announced that general elections will be held by December 2026, delinking the process from the 2008 population census and instead using the 2010 constituent units.
