The former Presidential Advisor on Religious Affairs, Sheikh Juma Saaid, has called on the management of the newly launched Equator Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) TV to prioritize programming that reflects and promotes the diverse cultures of Central Equatoria State.
According to Sheikh Juma Saaid, foreign content has had a negative influence on young people, contributing to the rise of gang groups commonly known as “Niggas.”
“The important message is that we want our TV in central Equatoria to reflect our cultures in the state and positive cultures. There are cultures that are not suppose to be broadcasted and it had contributed to the emergence of Niggas in Juba because they often see these on TV,” he said.
He noted that young people often imitate behaviors they observe on television, which can affect their social conduct in harmful ways.
Sheikh Juma Saaid made the remarks during the ongoing launch of the Equator Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) and the Central Equatoria State Newspaper.
“We want the TV to broadcast content that encourages peace and good up brining among the young generation,” he added.
State authorities say the establishment of the EBC TV and Central Equatoria State Newspaper will help ensure timely access to information and strengthen public engagement.
Officials said the two platforms are designed to complement each other and reach a wide range of audiences across the state.
EBC was first established several years ago but later stopped operating due to logistical and operational challenges.
