Calm has returned to Tonj East County of Warrap State following deadly communal violence that has killed 17 people, and wounded 26 others over the weekend, authorities said.

Inter-communal conflict erupted between armed youth from Payak and Mapara on Christmas Eve of December 24 and escalated on the next day – leading to the dozens of casualties.

Speaking to Eye Radio from Tonj East on Tuesday December 27, Executive Director Machuei Bith Bol said the security forces managed to subdue the situation.

β€œThe forces which were brought here are very small, but we were ordered by the governor to go the scene,” he said.

According to him, the general security situation in Tonj East is now normal.

“The forces were however deployed. But the force which we had were very small. The security situation generally in Tonj East today is normal.”

On Saturday evening, a motorist was ambushed and killed while leaving Paliang village for the county headquarters, Romic.

Following the deadly ambush, youth from Mapara Payam reportedly carried out a revenge attack on Sunday.

The sectional violence was later reported to have wounded 26 people from both sides.
