Bor prison remains closed over lack of mattresses, nets

The main prison in Bor will remain closed for more than a month due to lack of mattresses and mosquito nets, authorities in Jonglei State have said.

The Bor Central Prison was destroyed in fighting when the conflict started at the end of 2013.

The Director of the Prison Service in the state, Alfred Manyang Agok, told Eye Radio’s Correspondent in Bor, Jacob Achiek, that more than 500 mattresses and mosquito nets are needed before the opening.

“The prison was scheduled to open this week but the opening has now been delayed for more than a month,” Mr Manyang said.

He added that the United Nations Development Program withdrew its support to the prison services due to the conflict.

There were 307 inmates at the prison before the conflict, including three on a death row. But they ran away when the prison was broken.

New prisoners are now being kept at the police stations.
