The caretaker governor of Unity State has urged people who have fled Bentiu to return home after the SPLA retook the town from soldiers loyal to Dr. Riek Machar.

Dr. Joseph Nguen Monytuil urged locals to rebuild their homes destroyed in the fighting.

“The rebels have transformed Bentiu town into a wreckage town and all the other towns they were in,” he said.

“I call upon all the civilians of Unity state that I have returned to the State after security and order have been established in the state, and now call upon every citizen of Bentiu to come back to their homes.

“Those who destroyed the town are no longer in here; it is I and your army, the SPLA who are now securing the town.”

Dr. Monytuil said most of the institutions in Bentiu, including banks, have been looted.
