Former deputy interior minister Salva Mathok dies

The Specialized Committee on Defense and Veteran Affairs at the national legislature has confirmed the passing on of its member, General Salva Mathok.

The committee did not indicate where the former deputy Minister of interior died on Tuesday.

However, the spokesperson of the parliament said the lawmaker died while receiving treatment in Nairobi-Kenya as opposed to media reports he died in Bangkok, Thailan.

“It is we deep sorrow that we announced to the leadership, honorable members, and the entire staff of the transitional legislative assembly, the sudden passing of Honorable General Salva Mathok Gendit Piol, a member of the Specialized Committee on Defense and Veteran Affairs,” it said.

In a statement to Eye Radio’s newsroom, signed by the chair Michael Ayuen Johnson, the Specialized Committee on Defense and Veteran Affairs at the Transitional Legislative Assembly said it has lost a patriotic icon of nationalism.

It described him as an energetic member of parliament and a liberator of the South Sudanese people.

Bola Tinubu wins Nigeria’s presidential election

Ruling party candidate Bola Tinubu has been declared the winner of Nigeria’s disputed presidential election.

The 70-year-old veteran politician got 36% of the vote, official results show.

His main rival Atiku Abubakar polled 29%, and Labour’s Peter Obi 25%. Their parties had earlier dismissed the poll as a sham, and demanded a rerun.

Mr Tinubu is one of Nigeria’s richest politicians, and based his campaign on his record of rebuilding the biggest city, Lagos, when he was governor.

He was nevertheless defeated in the city by Mr Obi, a relative newcomer who mobilised the support of many young people, especially in urban areas, shaking up the country’s two-party system.

Mr Tinubu won most other states in his home region of the south-west, where he is known as a “political godfather”.

He campaigned for the presidency under the slogan: “It’s my turn”.

President Muhammadu Buhari is stepping down after two terms in office, marked by economic stagnation and growing insecurity around the country – from an Islamist insurgency in the north-east to a nationwide crisis of kidnapping for ransom and separatist attacks in the south-east.

Mr Tinubu now has the task of solving these problems, among others, in Africa’s most populous nation and biggest oil exporter.

After fighting military rule in Nigeria, escaping into exile and being one of the founding members of the country’s democracy in 1999, Mr Tinubu will feel that he was destined to become president.

He was always the favourite to replace Mr Buhari – whom he helped become president – and the hurdles he has surmounted to get here will make this an even sweeter win for him.

He was not expected to win the party primary, yet he won.

Many said his decision to go with another Muslim as a running mate would prove an obstacle, but it was not.

Previously all major parties have split their presidential tickets with a Christian from the south and a northern Muslim in order to achieve broad support across this vast nation of 210 million people.

He will now have to prove that he can hit the ground running and that he is still the same formidable force who built modern Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub.

Mr Tinubu will be taking charge of a crumbling economy, widespread insecurity and as the results map shows, a country retreating into regional and religious blocs.

“It is in my plan to visit Fashoda, the headquarters of the Kingdom. Your Majesty as soon as these plans are in place, I will visit you at the seat of your Kingdom as part of your responsibility to promote peace and our heritage,” he said

At least ten killed in Mangala boat attack

At least ten people died when a stationary boat loaded with relief supplies was fired at between Juba and Mangala by unknown attackers, according to members of parliament representing  Unity state at the national legislature.

The incident happened on Tuesday while the boat loaded with humanitarian supplies was due to set off for Unity state.

“The boat started to move from Gabat around 2 PM and in fact, it happened that it stuck in the riverside and the reason was because of the shallowness of the river,” said  Badit Dak, a member of parliament representing Leer County of Unity State.

“When that happened, those criminals came and asked for assistance and the assistance was given to them by the passengers,

“After they were given the assistance they needed, they were given money and some items, and then after moving a distance they shot at those on the boat,” he added.

The lawmakers have identified the victims as Luony Garech, Bol Tech Nhial, Bachuoi Tech Nhial, Gatgong Wang Dhieu, Chonath Dieu Kor, Gatkuoth Bap, Gatchiang Detor Kai, Paulino Madit Dut, Gatkuoth Yaka, and one unknown.

Kiir prioritizes repatriation of S. Sudanese refugees before elections

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has expressed support for facilitating the voluntary return of refugees after meeting their representatives including IDPs in Juba on Wednesday.

The President’s session was held under the theme: Forgiveness, Reconciliation, Peace, and Resettlement aimed at promoting unity among the people of South Sudan, according to the presidential press unit.

“With peace implementation moving towards the final phase where elections will end the transitional period, repatriating our people from the camps in neighboring countries should top our agenda,” President Kiir said.

The head of state reportedly appealed to the IDPs and refugees to return to their respective areas of origin or the capital city, Juba.

He is said to have assured the displaced persons of their security while calling on the international partners to support the government in reintegrating returnees back to their areas of origin.

“For those who will opt to return to their habitual areas of residence, the government will provide security and would work jointly with partners to organize logistics around what is needed to resettle successfully in those areas,” he said.

“Equally, for those who can not go back to their areas of residence, we have spoken to authorities in states where IDPs camps are located to set aside land to resettle them,’ he added.

He reiterated his call to state authorities to allocate land to the IDPs.

Presidency scraps NSS power to arrest without a warrant

President Salva Kiir and his first deputy, Dr. Riek Machar have resolved to scrap the law that allows the National Security Services to arrest people without an arrest warrant.

That’s according to Cabinet Affairs Minister, Dr. Martin Elia Lumoro.

“I want to point out that the National Security Law where there was apparently disagreement on sections 54 and 55 pertaining to arrest with or without a warrant has now been agreed by President and the First Vice Presiden,t and those will be scrapped.

The national security service act, 2014 as amended in September 2019 gave the national security service the power to arrest anyone without a warrant.

Rights groups had described the law as a means to silence critics as the NSS has been accused of widespread human rights abuses.

The move comes as the unity government officially commences the two-year peace roadmap Wednesday.

USAID announces $3m to support farmers

The U.S. Agency for International Development on Tuesday announced $3 million in additional funding for agriculture resilience programs in South Sudan.

USAID said Food security remains its priority and the additional funds will be used to strengthen community agriculture development.

These additional funds will support farmer groups in areas where seasonal production is possible and specifically target women’s economic advancement through increased agriculture production and diet diversification.

The funding is also expected to help women farmers to access improved seed varieties, increase crop diversity and improve agricultural practices.

“This additional funding will strengthen USAID efforts to reduce emergency food dependence and increase household resilience,” said Kate Crawford, the USAID Mission Director for South Sudan.

Robert Mugabe’s son arrested in Zimbabwe over cars trashed at Harare party

A son of Zimbabwe’s former President, Robert Mugabe, has been arrested over allegations he damaged property at a party in Harare.

Robert Mugabe junior, who is thought to be 31, is accused of destroying cars and other property over the weekend.

He was arrested following a complaint from his friend, Sindiso Nkatazo, also 31, police said in a tweet.

Mr Mugabe junior, the second child of the former president with his widow, Grace, has not yet commented.

The police say the damaged property was valued at $12,000 (£10,000).

News site ZimLive posted a video of Mr Mugabe junior walking to Harare Magistrates’ Court wearing a suit and facemask, followed by a throng of people, as others stood on the sidelines taking pictures of him on their phones.

Former President Robert Mugabe died in 2019 at the age of 95, two years after being forced to resign following 37 years in power.

It is extremely unlikely that his son would have been arrested if his father was still president, analysts say.

Mr Mugabe was replaced by his former right-hand man Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Relations between him and the Mugabe family had been fraught after they accused him of betraying Zimbabwe’s long-time leader.

His widow, Grace, had harboured ambitions of succeeding her husband but was sidelined by supporters of Mr Mnangagwa.

However, Mr Mugabe junior has since reconciled with President Mnangagwa and last year attended a rally where he was publicly welcomed back into the ruling Zanu-PF party.
