A civil rights activist has called for an independent investigation into the alleged sexual exploitation of female inmates by wardens at the Juba Central Prison.

A video surfaced on social media on January 27th, 2024, of an inmate identified as Akon Akuei Ajou, who made shocking allegations of sexual exploitation that subsequently led to her pregnancy.

The scandalous revelation has sparked outrage and calls for action on social media platforms after the video she shared indicated some prison wardens allegedly involved in the act.

Juba Prison Director General Atok Atem said he had formed a committee to probe the matter, although the official said he suspects that the inmate went online to victimize some prison officials.

But Jackline Nasiwa., the Executive Director of the Center for Inclusive Governance Peace and Justice, says there is a need for an independent committee to investigate cases of sexual exploitation at the prison’s facilities.

“We had had investigation committees formed to investigate certain abuses like what we had for women who are abused sexually, conflict-related sexual violence and all these but these investigations even don’t come public,” Jackline said.

“We are saying that most of these investigations when they are formed, they should be made public,” she said.

“We require some kind of neutral body to do this kind of neutral investigation and there should not be even people in the system if we’re serious, it should be independent people who come and investigate so that we can see that the inmates have the freedom and don’t fear to talk.

“They should be a kind of ethical committees which are very neutral to investigate these kind of things”.

According to Civil Rights Activists, the trends of Sexual violence have been persistently increasing, calling for the top leadership of the country to take up measures to end the vice and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Sexual exploitation is a deeply rooted problem that extends beyond the confines of prison walls and vulnerable individuals, often marginalized and silenced, bear the brunt of such exploitation.
